The Auto Industry is experiencing lean times right now, but this will not last long. As the aggregate number of vehicles on the road decreases, the absolute need for new vehicles increases.

The design of the United States requires most Americans to own a vehicle. If we had to walk, stores, schools, churches and even friends would most likely live out of reach for most of us. Mass transit is not an option unless you you live in a large city like New York.

So as vehicles wear out and are taken off the roads of America, the total supply of vehicles in action decreases. It is just a matter of time that new vehicle sales will become necessary. Add this to the fact that a large number of people have suppressed their desire for a new vehicle purchase and when the demand for new vehicles starts the Auto Industry will see a boom of business not experienced since World War II.

The Auto Industry as a whole has cut jobs due to the new car sales slump, but has anyone told you the rest of the story? Jobs are being created due to the increase in preowned vehicle sales. These vehicles are creating sales and service positions. I would encourage everyone to be flexible. If you are a “new” vehicle sales person, you may want to  consider selling “preowned” vehicles. In most cases the gross profit is better and so is your compensation. If you are a technician, you may want to participate in the the repair of more than one or two manufacturers of vehicles. The flat rate system pays for work performed. I assure you that your paycheck won’t mind you working on other vehicles.

Job applications and resumes need to be accurate.

Most employers will research a prospective employee’s job application or resume. It is therefore very important that you be as accurate as possible when filling these documents out. Previous employment information needs to include correct addresses, phone numbers and dates of employment. Gaps in employment should be explained.  Trade refrences should be offered for any time that you were self-employed. Too many errors, discrepancies or unverifiable past jobs  may cause an employer to go on to the next best qualified candidate.

Don’t let the ecomomy slow you down.

If you beleive that the economy is bad, then it will be. Positive thinking allows for positive results. This is true for the employed and the unemployed. If you are employed, your perception of the world and the economy will be displayed in your day to day activities. If you beleive that people are not buying right now, your perception will turn into reality for you. It is important that your attitude stays positive and that you believe in your product, your place of employment and most importantly your skills and abilities. If you are unemployed, the same principles apply. Your customer is your prospective employer. If  your personnal outlook is less than positive, so goes your interview. Employers want people who are in it for the long haul and believe in themselves, the products they sell, and the employer they seek.
