We ask our Automotive “technicians” to be the best. Anything less than perfect is intolerable.

Here are a few items to consider:

We have allowed the industry to create demands that are depleting our rank and file. In this instant gratification world we have created an environment of stress.

We tell our techs that “the customer is waiting”. Hurry up they want to go. We force our techs to rush because the expectations of the average car owner is out of control. 

Our customers comments are as follows:

1. Oil change in how many minutes?
2. Check engine lights are easy just plug-in the computer scanner.
3.  I know that you said three hours but I have to go and go now. 
4. What is taking so long?

Then when something is not perfect we say we have a comeback. Is it a comeback or is it really a be back. They will be back because we created an environment that caused our techs to rush, guess, or be indifferent.

So as we burn our techs out and they seek other less stressful occupations what is the end result. We are seeing less and less experience in the field.

Any automotive employer that wants to be successful needs to support their staff. We are going to have to slow the process down so that adequate time is available for the proper diagnosis and repair of the complex equipment that we call automobiles.

Many auto techs and auto service advisors have roots that start out in the service drive.

If you are a person looking for a new career in the Car Industry, consider entering the Industry by an entry-level job.

When an individual is hired as a porter or valet and they have an opportunity to learn and grow the doors to other job positions usually open. Management usually realizes that a dedicated employee with “skills” is the best candidate for that open apprenticeship in the shop and even as a Service Advisor.

I personally have witnessed a porter who was earning $7.00 an hour get a shot at “helping” the service advisor staff. This person was so good with people that he was offered a position as a Service Advisor. He went from earning $7.00 per hour to earning well over $50,000 per year.

I have also witnessed service drive porters with an interest in fixing cars get an opportunity to fill an open lube tech or apprentice position. Most managers will support a dedicated employee with either an ”in-house” mentorship or with an automotive vo-tech program. 

Let’s not forget about the other available career paths. Many parts department stockers go on to become parts counter professionals and some even progress to be department managers! What about the sales porter who worked their way up into sales and then sales management.

Even though the Auto Industry has had a few hard knocks, do not think that it is down and out. If you place yourself in a position to be successful, the Auto Industry will still allow for many success stories in the future.

We can’t blame a business owner who wants to make money. They have invested their money and want to profit from this investment.

Unfortunately, there are many automotive professionals who have chosen to leave the industry. This is going to have a ripple effect as the competition for human assets heats up.

The statement that the car business is in your blood will ring true. As compensation increases in the near future, these defectors to the automotive industry will come back.

I recently have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The prognosis is good and only time will tell. The most important thing that this has brought home to me is that we all need to work to live but living to work has consequences. My family hardly knows me and when I am in a time of life that I want them to be there for me, it now makes me realize that I was never there for them.

Service departments are by design a supporting department to the Sales department.

Many businesses are now placing more emphasis on their Service department since it is a steady generator of income. The current economy along with the abilty of consumers to “get the best deal” may have forever changed the Service department’s place in the organizational chart. Only time will tell if  the shift is permanent.
